Elden Ring Receives Urgent PC Optimization Patch 1.16.2 — Crashes and Stuttering Addressed

FromSoftware rolls out a critical performance update for the Steam version, targeting long-standing graphical issues and freezing problems that have plagued PC players.

FromSoftware has today released an emergency optimization patch for the PC version of Elden Ring on Steam, version 1.16.2, aimed at resolving a range of persistent technical issues that have affected players across various hardware configurations. The patch arrives as welcome news for the game's still-thriving PC community, which has long reported frame-rate stuttering, sudden crashes, and rendering anomalies.

In an official announcement, FromSoftware strongly recommended that all players update their game through the Steam client before launching, emphasizing that the patch addresses "critical stability and compatibility" concerns. The update brings the application version to App Ver. 1.16.2 with regulation version Regulation Ver. 1.16.1.

According to the patch notes, the update focuses on three major areas of improvement. First, the underlying system software and middleware components integrated into the PC version have been upgraded, providing a more stable foundation across different hardware configurations. Second, the patch fixes a particularly frustrating bug where the game would suddenly freeze — sometimes for extended periods — on specific PC hardware and system setups. Finally, the update addresses unexpected crash-to-desktop scenarios that occurred during gameplay, as well as texture corruption and rendering flicker that appeared on certain GPU configurations.

The release of patch 1.16.2 comes at an interesting time for Elden Ring, as the game continues to maintain strong player engagement nearly four years after its original launch. SteamDB data shows the game still averages over 50,000 concurrent players daily, and the community has remained vocal about the need for ongoing technical support. This update signals that FromSoftware has not abandoned the PC version in favor of the upcoming Switch 2 Tarnished Edition and The Duskbloods expansion.

For players who have been experiencing the notorious stuttering issues — particularly in密集 areas like Liurnia of the Lakes and the Shadow of the Erdtree's Abyssal Woods — this patch may finally provide the smooth experience they have been waiting for. FromSoftware has also indicated that further stability and compatibility improvements are planned for future updates.

Make sure to update your game through Steam before venturing back into the Lands Between. If you encounter any new issues after the patch, be sure to report them through Bandai Namco's official support channels.
