In a new interview with Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, Hidetaka Miyazaki reveals that FromSoftware is actively exploring new original IPs, hinting at exciting projects beyond Elden Ring and The Duskbloods.
FromSoftware president and creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki has dropped tantalizing hints about the studio's future plans in a recent interview with Famitsu. While the studio continues to support Elden Ring with patches and has the highly anticipated The Duskbloods expansion on the horizon, Miyazaki confirmed that the team is already brainstorming ideas for entirely new intellectual properties.
"We have several ideas that are still in the very early conceptual phase," Miyazaki told Famitsu in the interview published this week. "Some of them could evolve into full-fledged projects, though it's too early to announce anything concrete. What I can say is that we don't intend to limit ourselves to what we've already built. FromSoftware has always thrived on creating new worlds and new challenges."
This statement comes at a time when FromSoftware is arguably at the peak of its creative and commercial success. Elden Ring has sold over 28 million copies worldwide since its 2022 launch, making it one of the best-selling games of all time. The upcoming The Duskbloods expansion, announced earlier this year, promises to deliver even more of the challenging yet rewarding gameplay that fans have come to expect from the studio.
Industry analysts speculate that Miyazaki's comments could point toward a return to the studio's roots in more experimental, smaller-scale projects — similar to what Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice represented when they first launched. These games, while sharing DNA with the Souls series, each carved out unique identities with distinct combat systems and narrative approaches.
Miyazaki also addressed the studio's approach to difficulty, a recurring topic in FromSoftware discussions. "We never design difficulty for the sake of difficulty," he emphasized. "Every challenge we place in our games serves a purpose — to create a sense of accomplishment, to tell a story through gameplay, to make the world feel dangerous and real. That philosophy will continue to guide us regardless of what new IPs we pursue."
For Elden Ring fans, the immediate future remains bright. The team continues to roll out performance patches — the recent 1.16.2 update addressed long-standing PC optimization issues — and The Duskbloods expansion is expected to launch later this year. Beyond that, however, Miyazaki's words suggest that the legendary studio has no intention of resting on its laurels.
