New gameplay details for FromSoftware's first Nintendo-exclusive title in 23 years reveal a dark fantasy battleground where 8 players fight for survival in an interconnected arena.
FromSoftware has today released a substantial new information drop for The Duskbloods, their upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive that marks the studio's first Nintendo-only project since 2003's Lost Kingdoms II. The new details paint a picture of an ambitious PvPvE experience that combines the studio's signature challenging combat with a unique multiplayer formula.
A New Multiplayer Vision
Unlike the cooperative focus of the Souls series or the asynchronous multiplayer of Elden Ring, The Duskbloods drops eight players into a single persistent arena where every session is different. Each match places you in a sprawling, interconnected map called the "Crimson Crucible" — a shattered dimension filled with roaming monsters, environmental hazards, and five other players, all competing for the same precious resource: "Echo Shards."
These Echo Shards are the key to victory. Players must collect enough shards scattered across the map while fending off both AI-controlled horrors and other players. The twist? Two of the eight participants are secretly marked as "Duskbloods" — corrupted players with significantly boosted stats who are hunting everyone else. The true allegiance of each player is only revealed through gameplay, creating a paranoid tension that FromSoftware describes as "social horror meets souls-like combat."
Weapon and Build Customization
The Duskbloods features a streamlined class system with six distinct archetypes at launch: the Vanguard (sword-and-board tank), the Shadowblade (stealth assassin), the Arcanist (ranged magic user), the Beasthunter (heavy weapon bruiser), the Warden (support/healer hybrid), and the Revenant (a high-risk, high-reward glass cannon). Each class comes with unique weapons, abilities, and progression trees that can be customized between matches.
What sets The Duskbloods apart from typical battle royale-style games is its persistent progression system. Between matches, players can upgrade their character's base stats, unlock new weapon arts inspired by Souls games, and even purchase cosmetic modifications for their armor sets. FromSoftware confirmed that there will be no paid microtransactions or season passes — all unlocks are earned through gameplay.
Nintendo-Flavored FromSoftware
The game runs on FromSoftware's proprietary engine, heavily optimized for the Switch 2 hardware. Early previews suggest a solid 30 FPS in docked mode and 30 FPS in handheld, leveraging the Switch 2's DLSS capabilities for crisp image quality. The art direction, overseen by long-time FromSoftware artist Masanori Waragai, embraces a dark gothic aesthetic with Japanese folklore-inspired creature designs — a unique fusion that feels distinctly different from the Western fantasy of Elden Ring or the Victorian horror of Bloodborne.
"We've wanted to make a game specifically for Nintendo hardware for many years," said director Hidetaka Miyazaki in a prepared statement. "The Duskbloods represents our love for dark fantasy and our desire to experiment with multiplayer in ways we haven't before. This is not Elden Ring with multiplayer — this is something entirely new."
The Duskbloods is scheduled for a holiday 2026 release exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2. A closed beta test is expected in the coming months, with registration details to be announced through the Nintendo Switch 2 Online app.
