Fortnite v40.40 Update Brings Overwatch Heroes and Removes Lethal Fall Damage

The biggest Fortnite update of the season adds Overwatch collaboration skins, reworks core damage mechanics, and kicks off Showdown Rivalries Act 3.

Epic Games has deployed one of the most consequential updates in recent Fortnite history. The v40.40 update, which went live on May 14, 2026, brings a landmark collaboration with Blizzard Entertainment's Overwatch franchise, alongside a controversial change that has the community buzzing: the removal of lethal fall damage from Battle Royale.

The Overwatch collaboration adds iconic heroes as purchasable skins in the Item Shop. While specific character details remain under wraps, dataminers have identified assets for Tracer, Genji, and D.Va — each coming with unique back bling, pickaxes, and emotes inspired by their Overwatch abilities. This marks one of the first major crossovers between Epic Games and Blizzard's hero shooter universe, following in the footsteps of previous legendary collaborations with Marvel, Star Wars, and Dragon Ball.

Perhaps the most talked-about change in v40.40 is the fall damage rework. Players no longer take fatal damage from falling — instead, they'll survive with a minimum of 1 HP. This change fundamentally alters the risk-reward calculus of high-ground positioning, build battles, and glider redeploy strategies. While some purists argue this removes a key skill element from the game, others appreciate the reduced frustration of dying to accidental missteps during intense build fights. Epic has stated they will monitor the change closely and may revert or adjust it in future patches.

The update also launches Showdown Rivalries Act 3, the latest chapter in Fortnite's ongoing seasonal narrative event series. This act introduces new NPC bosses scattered across the map, offering legendary loot drops for players willing to take on the challenge. Additionally, the OG Season 8 — which brought back nostalgic content from the pirate-themed season — continues to run alongside the main Battle Royale mode until June 17.

For competitive players tracking the evolving meta, the v40.40 patch includes weapon balancing adjustments and bug fixes that affect several popular loadouts. Be sure to check our weapon guide for the latest tier lists and optimal strategies for the new patch environment.
