With just 17 days remaining until Fortnite Chapter 7's spectacular debut, Epic Games has been steadily releasing details about what promises to be the most transformative update in the game's history.
On July 14, Fortnite will enter Chapter 7 — and it's doing so with a bang. The headline feature is the transition to Unreal Engine 6, making Fortnite the first major game to showcase Epic's next-generation engine technology. UE6 introduces Nanite 2.0, a dramatic leap over the original Nanite virtualized geometry system, promising photorealistic environmental detail at stable 60 FPS across all current-gen platforms.
The new map — officially named "Neon City" — is a sprawling cyberpunk metropolis divided into five distinct districts. Early previews have showcased the Glimmering Spire (a central corporate tower district), the Rusted Underbelly (the underground industrial sector), the Neon Bazaar (a vibrant marketplace zone), the Data Dunes (the outer wasteland ring), and Zero Point Plaza (a central hub area with ties to the ongoing storyline). Each district features unique traversal challenges, environmental hazards, and loot distributions that will fundamentally change drop strategies.
Speaking of traversal, Chapter 7 introduces wall-running as a core movement mechanic — a first for Fortnite. Players will be able to sprint along vertical surfaces, chain wall-runs into slides and jumps, and access elevated positions that were previously unreachable. Combined with the existing mantling and sprint mechanics, the movement system in Chapter 7 represents a massive expansion of player mobility that competitive players are already theorycrafting around.
Epic has also confirmed a new 1v1 competitive mode called "Digital Duel," designed for players who want a pure, no-distraction skill test. Digital Duel will feature its own ranking system, curated weapon rotations, and a spectate mode that could make it a popular streaming content format.
For players still wrapping up Chapter 6, the "Neon Dawn" finale event begins on July 12 — just two days before the Chapter 7 launch. This will be the final narrative event of Chapter 6, setting up the storyline transition to the cyberpunk world. Participating players will earn exclusive rewards that carry forward into Chapter 7, including a limited "Neon Dawn" glider and loading screen.
Pre-load for Chapter 7 begins on July 10, four days before launch. Given the scale of the UE6 upgrade, the patch is expected to be substantial — Epic recommends at least 40GB of free space. Players who pre-load will be able to jump into the action immediately when servers go live on July 14 at 2 AM PT (5 AM ET / 10 AM BST).
Rumors of a Cyberpunk Edgerunners collaboration continue to circulate, though Epic has not confirmed any crossover content for the launch window. Given the Neon City's aesthetic, such a collaboration would be a natural fit. We'll update you as more details emerge in the final countdown to Chapter 7.
