After 13 years on PlayStation 4, Activision finally goes current-gen only — and the rumored title is Modern Warfare 4.
In a move that marks the end of an era, publisher Activision has officially confirmed that this year's Call of Duty entry will not be released on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. After an unprecedented 13-year run spanning over a dozen titles on the PS4 platform, the franchise is finally making the leap to be current-gen and PC exclusive.
This decision, reported by multiple industry outlets including Push Square, signals a significant shift in Call of Duty's development strategy. For years, the franchise has been criticized by the community for holding back its visual fidelity and gameplay innovations to accommodate aging last-gen hardware. With the PS5 install base now comfortably exceeding 70 million units worldwide, and Xbox Series X|S approaching 40 million, the time finally seems right for Activision to cut ties with the past.
While Activision has not officially confirmed the subtitle, mounting evidence points toward this year's title being Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. This would be the direct sequel to 2023's Modern Warfare III and the fourth installment in the modern-day reboot continuity. Leaks suggest the game will feature a campaign spanning multiple global hotspots, alongside a revamped movement system that borrows elements from both the classic Modern Warfare era and recent Black Ops titles.
Perhaps the most intriguing rumor emerging from the community is that CoD 2026 appears to be focusing on a forgotten mode that hasn't been heard from in over 30 months. Speculation points toward the potential return of the classic Spec Ops cooperative mode, which has been largely absent since Modern Warfare (2019). Alternatively, some dataminers suggest a complete overhaul of the Zombies mode could be in the works, bringing it back to its round-based survival roots.
For competitive players, the annual Call of Duty League season is in full swing, with teams already locked into the Major tournaments. Meanwhile, Warzone continues to dominate the free-to-play battle royale space, and the upcoming integration with Modern Warfare 4's arsenal is expected to shake up the meta significantly.
