Infinity Ward's latest Call of Duty entry continues its record-breaking pre-order run with the premium $120 Vault Edition selling out at major retailers.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has achieved yet another commercial milestone, with pre-order numbers continuing to climb well past the initial reveal surge. According to retail tracking data compiled by industry analysts, the $120 Vault Edition has now sold out at GameStop, Best Buy, and Amazon within the first three weeks — a feat that few premium editions have managed in recent years.
The Vault Edition's sell-out status has led to a flurry of activity on third-party markets, with listings on eBay and StockX seeing prices as high as $250 for physical collector's copies. Infinity Ward has confirmed that additional Vault Edition stock is being produced but warned that the second wave won't arrive until early August, just ahead of the multiplayer beta.
The standard edition, priced at $79.99, continues to see strong demand across all platforms including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and notably Nintendo Switch 2. Pre-orders for the Switch 2 version have been particularly strong, reflecting the pent-up demand for premium FPS experiences on Nintendo's new hardware.
Analysts at industry research firm Ampere Analysis project that Modern Warfare 4 could surpass the all-time Call of Duty pre-order record set by 2020's Black Ops Cold War if the current trajectory holds. "The combination of the IW 10.0 engine hype, the Omnimovement revolution, and the standalone campaign promise has created a perfect storm," said senior analyst Piers Harding-Rolls.
The multiplayer open beta — scheduled to begin August 14 — is expected to provide the next major wave of momentum. Pre-order customers gain early access starting August 12, with the beta expected to feature 6 maps including remastered versions of fan-favorites Rust and Terminal alongside 4 new IW 10.0 original maps.
With the November 6 launch date drawing closer and the beta just two months away, Activision and Infinity Ward appear to have struck the right chord with the Call of Duty community. Whether MW4 can maintain this momentum through the fall — especially with GTA 6's looming shadow — remains the billion-dollar question.
