Infinity Ward confirms MW4 removes the infamous forced restart after game updates and moves shader compilation to background at game close. Switch 2 version also confirmed running smoothly.
Call of Duty fans have reason to celebrate. Infinity Ward has confirmed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, launching October 23, will finally eliminate one of the series' longest-standing player frustrations — the forced restart after every game update.
According to the official Call of Duty intelligence site CharlieIntel, developers at Infinity Ward confirmed the change during a recent media briefing. For years, every Call of Duty title has required players to fully close and relaunch the game after downloading updates, with repeated patches sometimes triggering an endless loop of restarts. This long-standing pain point has frustrated millions of players across PC and console platforms alike.
"We heard the feedback loud and clear," said Jack O'Hara, Infinity Ward studio head. "In Modern Warfare 4, updates will apply seamlessly in the background. Players can jump straight into action without the dreaded restart prompt."
Beyond eliminating forced restarts, the studio is also overhauling the shader compilation process. Previously, PC players had to wait through lengthy shader compilation screens every time they launched the game — a process that could take several minutes on slower systems. MW4 will instead perform shader compilation at game shutdown, allowing players to dive directly into matches without any pre-game wait.
The changes were met with overwhelming positivity across the Call of Duty community. Reddit threads praising the move garnered thousands of upvotes within hours, with many players noting this was "the single best QoL improvement" in the series in years. Some joked that they "never thought they'd see the day" the forced restart screen would be removed.
In a separate update, O'Hara also confirmed that Modern Warfare 4 runs "exceptionally well" on the Nintendo Switch 2, marking the first Call of Duty title to launch on a Nintendo platform simultaneously with other platforms. The Switch 2 version will support Joy-Con mouse controls, leveraging the new hardware's unique features. All versions — Xbox Series X|S, PS5, PC, and Switch 2 — will launch simultaneously on October 23, 2026.
Notably, MW4 will not be part of Xbox Game Pass at launch, marking a departure from recent series entries. Microsoft has stated this decision is part of a broader strategy to reduce the price of Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, with the game expected to arrive on the subscription service approximately one year after launch.
Modern Warfare 4 also brings a host of other changes: a return to grounded soldier-perspective storytelling, the removal of the omnimovement system introduced in Black Ops 7, and a complete overhaul of the Prestige system. The game is directed by Infinity Ward and powered by an enhanced version of the IW engine.
With pre-orders already live across all platforms and a potential campaign early access window being explored, MW4 is shaping up to be one of the biggest Call of Duty launches in recent memory.
