MW4 Beta First Weekend Report — Impressions, Meta Trends and Early Standout Weapons

The MW4 early access beta is fully underway. With thousands of players diving into Gunsmith 2.0 across 8 maps, the early meta is already taking shape. Here's everything we've learned from the first weekend.

Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 4 early access beta kicked off on July 10, and the first weekend of play has already generated massive buzz across the Call of Duty community. Pre-order players across all platforms have been flooding into the 8-map rotation, putting Gunsmith 2.0 through its paces and shaping what could become the definitive MW4 meta.

Gunsmith 2.0: A New Level of Customization

The headline feature of the beta is undoubtedly the revamped Gunsmith 2.0 system, which expands weapon customization to 10 attachment slots. Early feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with players praising the depth of customization options. The new "Receiver Core" system allows players to swap between different base weapon configurations — changing caliber, fire rate, and recoil patterns before adding attachments. This layer of depth has created a steep but rewarding learning curve.

Early Meta Standouts

After the first 48 hours, several weapons have emerged as early favorites. The M4CQBR — a compact, high-RPM carbine — is dominating close-quarters engagements thanks to its lightning-fast ADS speed. At medium range, the MCX Spear is the go-to choice for its manageable recoil and solid damage profile. Long-range specialists are gravitating toward the returning EBR-14, which has received a significant handling buff. On the SMG front, the Vector PDW is turning heads with its unique hyperburst mechanic.

Map Rotation Impressions

The beta map pool includes three brand-new maps and five remastered classics. New map Neon Terminal — a nighttime airport siege set in a rain-soaked terminal — has quickly become a fan favorite for its three-lane design and dynamic lighting. The remastered Rust 2.0 expands the original with underground tunnels and elevated catwalks, while keeping the chaotic energy that made the original iconic. Players have noted that map flow feels faster than MW3, with more emphasis on vertical traversal.

Performance and Feedback

Technically, the beta has been smooth across PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a consistent 120fps in performance mode. PC players have reported some shader compilation stutter on certain map transitions, which Infinity Ward has acknowledged and is actively investigating. The beta will run through the weekend, with the open beta for all players scheduled to follow.

We'll continue updating our Weapon Stats page with MW4 data as the meta evolves. Stay tuned for loadout guides and competitive analysis throughout the beta period.
